Investment Market Update
Asian stocks fell as a sell-off in technology shares in the US spread to Asia following results from Amazon. Samsung Electronics Co. and Tencent Holdings Ltd. had the biggest declines in the MSCI Asia Pacific Index.
US stocks ended the day mixed as tech stocks closed lower following quarterly results from Amazon which showed a 77% fall in profit as the company expands investment in video content and growing markets. However net sales closed higher by 25%.
UK stocks closed mixed as drugmaker AstraZeneca fell by 15% after announcing disappointing results. The firm said first-quarter revenue fell 10% to £3.84bn. It also reported a major setback in trials of a new lung cancer drug therapy.
- Halfway through Tidjane Thiam’s three year restructuring plan, Credit Suisse Group AG is looking more like a wealth manager. Switzerland’s second largest lender on Friday reported a 78% increase in second-quarter profit, to 303 million francs, boosted by earnings at its two private banking units. Analysts had expected profit of 294 million francs.
- Senior Treasury civil servant Sir Dave Ramsden has been selected as the Bank of England's new governor for markets and banking. He replaces Charlotte Hogg, who resigned in March just two weeks into the job after failing to declare her brother worked for Barclays. Sir Dave will also join the Bank's Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), which sets interest rates.
