Investment Market Update
Most Asian stock were up as Japanese stock rose to their highest since August 2015. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe declared an $18 billion economic package.
US markets held steady on Friday, as gains in telecommunication and energy companies offset losses in other sectors. The limited movement kept two of three major indexes ahead for the week, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq fell.
UK shares reversed early losses to finish higher as the pound lost ground against other currencies. Theresa May said there should be a two-year transition period after Brexit, during which trade should continue on current terms, however, analysts said the pound dipped after she had failed to give concrete details on how the UK would retain access to the EU's single market.
- German Chancellor Angela Merkel has been re-elected for a fourth term while nationalists have made a historic surge in federal elections. Her conservative CDU/CSU bloc has seen its worst result in almost 70 years but will remain the largest in parliament.
- President Donald Trump opened himself to what could be a new wave of legal challenges with a revised travel ban that adds three countries to the list of nations facing restrictions on entering the US.
