Asian shares mostly gained on Tuesday with investors continuing upbeat sentiment despite regional tensions over the Korean Peninsula and an uncertain outcome for Japan’s snap election later this month.

US stocks fell on Monday, with gains in the energy sector offset by losses in health care and telecommunications.

UK stocks closed lower on Monday in response to a rise in sterling which hit companies that earn money in dollars such as the mining and energy sectors.

  • A former City minister has called for an investigation into the private equity firm that owned Monarch. Greybull Capital is owed about £150m for loans made to the airline, but as a preferred creditor it will be first in line to be repaid when assets such as airport landing slots are sold. Lord Myners, a Labour peer, called for an inquiry into whether this was an issue of "fraudulent preference".
  • Theresa May has set out detailed plans for the first time on how Britain would try to keep trade flowing if it fell out of the EU without a deal, as the prime minister prepared for a high-stakes game of brinkmanship with Brussels. She told MPs that her conciliatory speech in Florence last month had introduced “a new dynamic” into Brexit talks, but added that the government had a duty to prepare for them failing.
