Asian stocks edged higher ahead of the start of the region’s earnings season this week, with investors betting that the outlook for economic growth and profits is strong enough to support record-high stock prices.

US stocks closed higher as investors shrugged off disappointing US jobs figures. The S&P 500 gained 0.7% and the Nasdaq Composite Index added 0.8%, both setting new closing records for the fourth straight day.

UK stocks saw a late surge as the FTSE 100 index closed at a new record high on the back of optimism about the economy and a rally in US stocks. British Gas owner Centrica rose 3.1% after it was upgraded by analysts. Insurance group Admiral fell 2.9% following an analyst downgrade.

  • Theresa May bid farewell to 2017 by firing her deputy and is starting the new year with a Cabinet reshuffle, a sign the British prime minister is intent on seeing Brexit to completion and fighting another election.
  • Angela Merkel’s own party bloc is making her life more difficult as hard-liners seek to force the German chancellor to shift to the right in talks on setting up a government. After more than three months of post-election stalemate, Merkel is seeking a commitment this week from the rival Social Democrats to start formal negotiations on extending their governing alliance.
